Saskatchewan Expands Coverage for rtCGM: What Healthcare Providers Need to Know

Published on: 19 June 2025
Improved covereage for Saskatchewan

The government-funded Saskatchewan Extended Benefits and Drug Plan has expanded coverage for real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) systems. Newly included are the following groups of people who use insulin:

  • People aged 65 and over
  • People aged 18 through 25

Dexcom rtCGM Systems are 100% covered with no co-pay or deductible for people in these age groups who meet the eligibility requirements.

This new funding builds on the province’s existing commitment to diabetes care, which has provided no-cost coverage since 2021 to youth and children under 18 living with diabetes.

With this latest expansion, Dexcom rtCGM Systems are now available to Saskatchewan residents aged 18 through 25 and aged 65 and over, on all forms of insulin therapy, including those using insulin pumps, as well as individuals being treated on basal and bolus insulin.

More Patients Can Now Access the Benefits of rtCGM Technology at No Cost

Saskatchewan has set a precedent as the first province in Canada to offer rtCGM systems, including Dexcom G6 and Dexcom G7, as an eligible benefit through its provincial Extended Benefits and Drug Plan, cost-free, regardless of the type of insulin therapy used.

In many provinces, government-funded rtCGM coverage for people in these age groups has traditionally included only those individuals who use both basal and bolus insulin therapy, or those using insulin pumps.

Saskatchewan’s decision to broaden its rtCGM coverage to include people who only use basal insulin reflects a growing recognition of the clinical and quality-of-life benefits rtCGM technology offers in diabetes management—including improved glycemic control, reduced incidence of hypoglycemia, and greater patient confidence1-6 in day-to-day care. Diabetes Canada commends the move, citing it as a significant step toward equitable access to essential diabetes tools.

With the most comprehensive rtCGM coverage in the country, Saskatchewan’s model may encourage other provinces looking to improve outcomes and enhance access to diabetes care.

Choosing rtCGM: More Effective Diabetes Management for People Using Insulin

Clinical evidence supports the use of real-time continuous glucose monitoring for any individual living with diabetes and on insulin. Significant benefits include improved A1C and increased time in range (TIR).5 A recent clinical study involving individuals living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) on non-intensive basal insulin therapy also demonstrated that rtCGM, such as Dexcom G7, can help reduce emotional stress associated with diabetes, improve perceived control, and foster greater confidence in self-management.6

Also worth noting, the American Diabetes Association’s 2025 Standards of Care now recommend rtCGM for a broader group, including people with type 2 diabetes—highlighting the value of systems like Dexcom G7 in improving diabetes management and quality of life for those using insulin.

With expanded coverage in Saskatchewan and growing support nationwide, healthcare providers can confidently prescribe Dexcom G7—the most accurate rtCGM system in Canada*,7—and help more people living with diabetes. As access has improved in Saskatchewan, this might be the time to consider the patients in your practice who now qualify for coverage and could benefit from rtCGM technology.
